Help and Advice for Creative Writers

Mentoring programme

This is a very concentrated, stimulating,  and potentially rewarding service for the writer who feels they have reached a stage where they will benefit from ongoing support -

  • as they write
  • as they finish a work
  • as they prepare to submit to publishers (final drafting)

Mentors will initially read and make a preliminary assessment of a submitted manuscript. They will make contact with the author and talk over, either in person or by email, this initial appraisal. At this point they will make specific suggestions about the road ahead, aimed at helping the writer to map out their path to completion or improvement. They will aim to accompany the writer as the work progresses, giving tailored feedback as the months progress and finally helping them to assess the next steps.

Full mentoring

This consists of six online sessions, to be arranged over 9 months. An initial assessment is made and then, at the end of the sessions, a report delivered on the  manuscript as it stands, with advice about future steps – if this is appropriate. Writer and mentor may decide between them how best to serve the interests of the work and the writer.

We aim to take on only writers close to their own ultimate goal, therefore this service is most suitable for writers who have already achieved the bulk of their manuscript and are ready for intense and sustained criticism.

One-off mentoring

By popular request we offer this unique service – short sessions charged by the hour to give targetted no-nonsense advice based on submitted material.

This may target the following questions

  • How do I get published?
  • Who should I approach – agent or publisher?
  • What are my realistic expectations of publication?
  • What about self-publishing?
  • I have a deal with a publisher already, is it fair?
